Sapucaia do Sul zoo in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, has welcomed its first buffy-tufted-ear marmoset twins.

This is wonderful news for the growth of the conservation assurance programme in Brazil, an important part of the conservation strategy for this threatened species of marmoset. The programme helps to ensure that the marmosets will not go extinct, and can provide individuals in the future for reintroduction back into safe forest habitat.

Tamarin Trust has been working with our Brazilian partners on various conservation workshops that bring everyone working with endangered tamarins and marmosets together to share experiences and build up knowledge and skills. Tamarin Trust and its expert colleagues have worked with sensitive species in captivity for many years, and can advise on how best to keep healthy breeding populations.

Our latest conservation husbandry workshop was held at Sapucaia do Sul zoo at the end of 2025. It is great to see the zoo’s achievements with buffy-tufted-ear marmosets. It goes to show that if we bring passionate people together to work on problems, sharing successes and failures, we can all make huge progress towards our goals.

Long may it continue. Many thanks to the Balcombe Charitable Trust for their specific support for this workshop.
