The muncipality of Iheus in the Brazilian state of Bahia has approved a draft law to make the golden-headed lion tamarin, or Bahian lion tamarin, the city’s official symbol. March 26 will be Bahian Lion Tamarin Day. This follows on from the recent naming of the buffy-headed marmoset as part of the municipality of Portiuncula’s heritage, with its own “Mountain Marmoset Day”. These initiatives highlight the importance of these monkeys to their local communities and help to raise awareness and support for their conservation. Congratulations to the many people working to save this wonderful species and its habitat in Bahia.
